ARTS 125 - Identity in Practice This course bridges the study of art and design with professional practice, guiding students through projects that explore the dynamic relationship between creator, client, and audience. Beginning with self-reflection, students will examine their own identities and how these influence their creative processes. From there, the course expands to explore the contrast between creating for oneself versus creating for others, emphasizing the role of identity in shaping visual communication.
Through critical discussions and hands-on projects, students will investigate how personal perspectives, biases, and assumptions affect their work, particularly when addressing diverse audiences. Thought-provoking questions such as “Who gets to create what, and for whom?” will encourage students to consider the broader implications of imagery and representation in reinforcing or challenging structural injustices.
With a focus on identity, community, conceptual development, and problem-solving, students will develop creative projects that integrate both traditional hand tools and digital technologies. By the end of the course, they will gain a deeper understanding of how art and design function as powerful tools for communication and social impact.
