ENG 281 - Special Topics in 19th-C American Literature

Special topics in 19thC American Literature: Rhyme and Reason in 19th-Century Poetry

This seminar offers both a broad view of and a deep dive into the work of poetry in the nineteenth century. Considering both the art and commerce of poetry - as well as its utility for advocating political and cultural issues - we will explore a diverse range of poets and their approaches to possibilities of meter and rhyme to make meaning in a rapidly changing world. Critical readings along the way will help to illuminate both the social function and formal working of verse forms. For English majors, this special topic version of ENG 281 may fulfill either the C1 (poetry) or a D2 (seminar 1700-1900), but not both.
