SPAN 131 - Social Change in Hispanic Literature

“SPAN131 - Social Change in Hispanic Literature” is an introductory course in literary and cultural analysis for students of Spanish that approaches literature as a space for social reflection, political critique, and ethical engagement. Through close reading of a wide range of texts and media-from canonical works to marginalized voices, and across genres such as poetry, narrative, theater, essay, testimonial writing, and visual culture-the course examines how literature in Spanish represents, questions, and reimagines social realities across different historical moments and cultural contexts. Emphasizing intersections of gender, class, race, age, and identity, the course introduces foundational tools of textual analysis while inviting students to understand literature as a living practice deeply connected to social change.
