SCRN 219 - Advanced Production Topics Spring 2026 Topic: Cinematography
In this course, students will learn to read and identify universal camera, lighting, and composition techniques for visual storytelling in video. The goal is to accumulate useful knowledge and experience in cinematography, and to implement it throughout the semester with special emphasis on motivation, intention, and vision. To do this, in addition to lectures, students will engage with selected examples of cinematic work in class, view films at home, and engage in reactive, analytical discussions around these. Students will dedicate significant time to hands-on practice with cinematography tools, techniques, and topics during class and as homework. These activities will lean heavily on concepts around camera work, lighting, and other relevant professional subjects. The ultimate goal is to spark creative ideas and inspiration while also providing practical, fundamental skills and knowledge. Throughout the semester, students will submit regular video assignments, participate in group critiques of class work, and provide supportive, specific individual feedback to one another.
This rotating-topics course engages students in various subfield-specific production topics, with instruction by professionals in each area. Semester-long course topics will include: cinematography, editing, and experimental filmmaking.
Students will be charged a V & PA lab fee upon registering for this course.
