CMLT 136 - Afrofuturism and Social Justice

Through literature and film, this course explores the engagement of Afrofuturism (understood broadly to designate alternative visions of the future proposed by writers and directors from various parts of the African diaspora, specifically the Americas and West Africa) with social justice and human rights. A core tenet of the course is to examine how Afrofuturism challenges modern Western assumptions to leverage instead other ways of knowing and doing primarily derived from Africa and its diaspora for social change.
