JAPN 195 - Movements and Margins in Japanese Literature and Film

This course aspires to unsettle dominant frameworks of race, gender, and class in Japan from postwar to present by attending to the experiences of marginal subjects in Japanese film and fiction. Using “movement” as our interpretive lens, we will consider how these subjects have navigated experiences of migration, itinerancy, and precariousness, and how they have forged social and political solidarities in the process. Students will study films by Matsumoto Toshio, Hayakawa Chie, and Kore-eda Hirokazu alongside works of fiction by Yū Miri, Nakagami Kenji, and others. In so doing, we will ask: If Japan’s margins are fundamentally mobile and ever-shifting, how might they shift our understanding of the center in turn?
