TA 140 - Sewing 2: Remake/Reuse/Refashion

This course will provide students instruction in use of sewing machines, iron, serger, fabric alteration (bleaching/dying/embroidery), and hand sewing techniques regularly employed in the practice of mending,  ”thrift-flipping”(aka remaking) and alteration of existing garments. These skills will be combined with lectures on fabric type, materials, manufacturing practices and global supply chain realities, history of textile manufacture and maintenance, the interplay between capitalism, human trafficking, and fast fashion and the high environmental cost of the modern garment industry.
