BIOL 221 - Developmental Biology

BIOL221 explores developmental biology-the study of how a single fertilized egg develops into a complex, multicellular animal with distinct cell types, tissues, and organs. Development is the process by which a genotype (both maternal and inherited) is translated into the phenotype of an adult organism. We will focus on the molecular and cellular mechanisms that control animal development, from early embryogenesis through tissue and organ formation. We will also examine how disruptions to these processes can lead to developmental disorders, connecting fundamental developmental mechanisms to observed clinical symptoms. A central theme of the course is the experimental study of development. You will engage with experimental approaches used in the field, and in the laboratory component of the course, you will design and carry out your own experiments and collect data using multiple animal systems.
