TA 130 - Contemporary Dance I

Contemporary Dance I  is an all-levels studio course that explores the historical roots, evolving practices, and creative possibilities of modern and contemporary dance. Open to students with a wide range of movement backgrounds, the course emphasizes efficient, expressive, and full-bodied movement while connecting technical practice to the form’s origins and continued evolution.

Classes meet twice per week and progress from floor work to standing and traveling phrases, drawing from modern dance techniques alongside influences from ballet, yoga, and Pilates. Students develop strength, coordination, flow, musicality, and endurance, while also engaging in introductory choreography and repertory. The course offers performance opportunities and provides both emerging and advanced movers with a supportive space to deepen technique, expand artistry, and connect history to embodied practice.
