IDND 211 - Archive Theory and Practice

This course is designed as a deep dive into archival research, starting with theoretical considerations and culminating in hands-on experience as students work in the archive as research assistants for scholars from across the country. The class will teach practical skills in using rare book libraries, focusing particularly on collections in the American Antiquarian Society (AAS) while keeping theoretical and ethical issues of archival research. In the first part of the semester, readings and virtual visits by scholars deeply engaged in archival research will provide background and examples of project development and problem solving. In the second part of the semester, students will work as research assistants for scholars from the across the country who have projects that can be supported by the AAS collections. Most weekly sessions will meet at the AAS, where students will work under the guidance of the instructor. This resume-building opportunity will be of particular interest to students interested in pursuing careers in LIS (library and information sciences) as well as any profession where research skills are crucial. Undergraduate and graduate students from all fields are encouraged to apply. Interested students should contact meneuman@clarku.edu
