ARTH 244 - Art, Landscape, and the Environment

We live in a world dominated by visual information, but how do we visualize the existential crisis of our changing climate? This upper-level seminar offers students a chance to dig into issues of visual representation and environmental change through selected readings about the history of landscape art and the environment over the past two centuries. Focusing largely, but not exclusively, on art made by artists from the north Atlantic world, we will examine how artists have responded to industrialization and changes in the climate through historical work in paint and photography and in contemporary mixed media work (performance, video, installation). How has art served as a critique of modern environmental change? What are effective artistic interventions, and how do artists advocate for large-scale social change in environmental practice? What does society lose by not listening to artists?
