ENG 209 - Writing the Novel II

Type of Course: Workshop
“As William Gass has written, “The writer, by choosing to write…, is choosing to relate to the world through words.” This class will treat both the short story and the short novel, and our emphasis will be on developing our attention to – and faculties with – those words with which we relate to the world. To that end, we’ll operate class in part as a studio, with some of our time devoted to writing; we’ll also spend a good deal of time discussing course readings and matters of craft and technique, and some time in writing workshops discussing student work. Students will submit a final portfolio of their own fiction, which may consist of linked stories, a novella, or pages toward a novel.”
