ENG 356 - Shakespeare from Page to Stage

Type of Course: Lecture, Workshop
Using four major plays, this course will provide historical context for understanding Shakespeare’s texts, exposure to close analysis of Shakespeare’s language (from both poetic and performance perspectives), as well as experience in acting Shakespearean roles. Students will be required to rehearse and perform scenes and monologues from four plays. Simultaneously, students will explore the texts’ historical contexts, looking in particular at early modern constructions of gender, kinship, social status and race. For undergraduate English majors, this course satisfies the Period (C-1b) requirement.
