Master of Business Administration/Master of Arts in Community Development and Planning

Overview

The Dual MBA/MA in Community Development and Planning (CDP) combines MBA requirements with CDP coursework in the department of International Development, Community and Environment, which is dedicated to addressing the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century: environmental sustainability, social justice and economic well-being.
 

The MA in CDP teaches students to meet the challenges of urban revitalization in the United States, helping you to comprehend the social, economic, and political forces that shape communities. Combined with the MBA coursework, students graduate prepared for leadership in a broad range of fields, including nonprofit operations and management, civil service, consulting, entrepreneurship and education.
 

Dual Degree MBA/MA in CDP Requirements

The MBA/MA Community Development and Planning dual degree program requires the completion of 22.5 graduate units. Five units of the 22.5 units of coursework that a student takes are allowed to overlap and count for both degrees. Students complete the core requirements of both academic programs, as well as electives for both degrees. Dual degree students complete the Dual Degree Capstone IDCE 348  (1 unit in total) in place of the MBA capstone and MA Research Paper requirement. Students begin this project at the end of their second year and complete it during their third year of the program. Dual Degree MBA/CDP students complete the Social Change concentration in the MBA program.

CDP Required Core Courses

The Master’s program in CDP requires  4.5 core CDP course units, 2.5 units of skills courses, and 3-4 units of CDP electives. Because some courses can overlap and count for both the MBA and MA degree, dual degree students complete fewer CDP elective courses than other MA students. You should tailor your skills and electives courses toward your area of specialization.

MBA Required Core Courses

The M.B.A curriculum consists of a combination of seven-week course modules and full-semester, 14-week courses. Modular courses count as 1/2 unit each, while a full semester course counts as one unit. Dual degree students complete 10.5 units of required MBA core coursework, plus the 1 unit dual degree capstone, which is taken in place of the MBA Experiential Learning Requirement course, and 1 unit of MBA elective coursework. Because some courses can overlap and count for both the MBA and MA degree, dual degree students complete fewer elective courses than MBA students. MBA/CDP dual degree students complete the Social Change concentration in the MBA program. A dual concentration is optional for dual degree students, but would require 2 - 3 more units of MBA elective coursework. 

Completion of a graduate internship is required for all students except: those who have 3 years of relevant professional work experience; those with five or more years of professional work experience, those with full-time employment during the length of the program, and those who are participating in an exchange program (ex. Sorbonne, Trier, etc.). It may be possible to waive these requirements. Visit a member of the Stevenish Career Management Center for more information.
