Geography, MA

M.A. Requirements

Only students who are admitted into the  Geography, PhD  program in the Graduate School of Geography are eligible to receive an M.A. in Geography. Two types of M.A. degrees are available once enrolled as a doctoral (Ph.D.) student: pre-doctoral M.A. (en-route to Ph.D.), and a Terminal M.A.

A pre-doctoral M.A. should be requested at the time of achieving ABD (“All But Dissertation”) or candidacy status. This type of M.A. degree would be for students entering the doctoral degree program directly from a B.A. or B.S. and/or if they have a Master’s degree in something other than geography.

A Terminal M.A. in geography is given only if the student leaves the doctoral program before completing the Ph.D., and meets the departmental requirements to receive the M.A.
