ENG 376 - Ethnic America: Literature, Theory, Politics

This course examines the ways in which strategies of translation have shaped Asian American, African American, Native American, and Latinx literatures from the mid-twentieth century to the present day. Surveying a broad spectrum of literature, film, memoir, poetry, and theory, students will familiarize themselves with signal debates in translation studies and gain a foundation in contemporary Ethnic American literature. Drawing on one of the four “modes” of translation we study in this course-interlingual, intermedial, cultural, and historical-students will produce a translation work of their own as a final project.
