ARTS 150 - Special Topics in Studio Art

This course addresses current or timely topics in the area of Studio Art. Topics can vary from semester to semester.

Spring 2024 Topics

150.1 Special Topic: Illustrating the Fantasy Narrative

From the endeavor for sincerity in the works of the pre-Raphaelites and the twisted visual puzzles of M.C. Escher, to 20th Century manga artists such as Katsuhiro Otomo and classic 1950s science fiction films, fantasy images provide a rich source of inspiration for the contemporary artist/illustrator. In this course, we will study art expressions both classical and contemporary that straddle the world of illustration and fine art. We will explore Surrealist artists such as Frida Kahlo and Max Ernst, the unique fruit and vegetable portraits of Archimboldo, investigate the morphed naturalistic sculptural forms of Lee Bontecou, and the artists that comprised the socially relevant and satirical Underground Comix Movement. We will explore the relationship between text, tale, and image as we create our own fantasy narrative paintings working with collage, and paint mediums such as acrylic, gouache, and/or watercolor. Prerequisite: any ARTS course.

150.2 Special Topic: Documentary Photo

Documentary Photography explores the camera as a tool for telling non-fiction stories. Students will gain practical experience through several short-term assignments followed by a longer form photo-documentary project. Our discussions will underscore the social and historical significance of documentary photography, and will offer students the opportunity to find their place in the medium. Through lectures and critique, we will cover the work of a diverse group of artists and discuss the methods they used to create bodies of work with visual and intellectual complexity. We will analyze contrasting styles as they are applied to similar themes (formal portraits, subcultures, family, cities, etc.) as ways of demonstrating how different interpretations can be equally effective. This course will also examine the relationship between words and images. We will work on editing and sequencing pictures and writing an accompanying text. Students will learn to articulate ideas about their own work and that of their peers through weekly critique. Students should be familiar with their cameras, film or digital may be used. Prerequisite: any ARTS course, ARTS 119 or ARTS120 strongly recommended.

Students will be charged a V & PA lab fee upon registering for this course.
