BIOL 255 - Virology

Viruses are the ultimate parasites-they hijack the molecular machinery of their host to make more copies of themselves. There are viruses that infect nearly every type of life, from bacteria to beluga whales; some even are parasites of other viruses! Through lectures and in-class discussion of current research articles, this class will explore the amazing biology of viruses and their impact on society and our planet. Through several essays students will engage in several ‘controversial’ topics relevant to viruses: are viruses alive or not, should scientists carry out research that evolves more virulent flu viruses, and virus-derived human genome editing technologies. Students will also give a final project presentation on a particular topic of virology of their choosing.
