HIST 107 - Special Topics in Global History Course Description:
This is an introductory-level course on global history, variable in content. Each semester the course is offered, the content will be based on student interest and faculty expertise. The course is repeatable for credit as long as the course content varies; students may take a specific iteration of the course only once.
SPRING 2024 TOPIC: History of Africa, 1850-Present
A continuation of HIST 116: Pre-Colonial African History, this course explores Africa’s position in global history from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. We will explore how Africans constructed their society in response to the challenges and opportunities of European colonialism, the Cold War, and post-colonial realities by critically examining sources such as films, books, life (oral) testimonies, and archival documents. The course will highlight African initiatives and agencies amid rapidly changing political, social, and ideological contexts. Key topics include European colonial rule, African nationalism, the Cold War’s impact on Africa, women, gender, and sexuality, and war and peace in Africa, which features Apartheid in South Africa, the Rwandan Genocide, and terrorism in Africa (Boko Haram and Al-Shabab).
