BIOL 239 - Evolutionary Developmental Biology

BIOL 239 is discussion-based course in evolutionary developmental biology, or “Evo-Devo”. Evo-Devo integrates evolutionary biology with molecular embryology, genetics, and genomics to investigate how changes in development have generated the incredible biological diversity seen in nature. Although development occurs across all multicellular lineages, this course focuses on the evolution of animal (metazoan) development. Through close reading and discussion of primary literature, we will ask: How do alterations in developmental processes lead to differences in animal form and function at both micro- and macroevolutionary scales?

Prerequisites: BIOL 105   and BIOL 118  ; or BIOL 221  ; or by instructor’s permission

Anticipated Terms Offered: Offered every other fall.
