This course examines the evolution of the concept of a “jury of one’s peers” over the course of American history, with particular emphasis on changes in the jury system in the past three decades. Topics include efforts to ensure the representation of racial minorities and women on juries, the ways in which juries are selected, psychological literature on jury deliberation and decisionmaking, and recent efforts to reform jury selection and jury service to increase the representativeneness of jurors, the satisfaction of jurors with their service, and the ability of jurors to arrive at fair verdicts.
