PSCI 220 - Legislative Redistricting: The Geography of Politics

Every ten years, following the completion of the U.S. Census, the borders of the United States’ 435 congressional districts are redrawn. The redrawing of district lines was once an activity that took place behind closed doors; today, however, computer mapping software enables American citizens to propose their own congressional district lines. In this course, we will consider the history of congressional districtng (and of geographical districts in general), some of the normative claims about what districts should look like, and legal conflicts over who should be represented. As part of the course, students will develop and defend their own district maps of Massachusetts. The class will present its proposed redistricting plans to Massachusetts policymakers and to the media.
