Graduate Geography Overview

Graduate Program

The Graduate School of Geography has awarded more doctorate degrees than any other geography program in the United States. We invite applications for admittance to our program from students interested in pursuing a PhD degree. Students are not accepted for master’s studies only, although many choose to earn that degree en route to the doctorate, and the M.A. is also available to those who leave the program early. Please view Geography, PhD  for detailed information on the Ph.D. Program or contact Brenda Nikas-Hayes, Graduate Program Administrator by telephone: (508) 793-7337; fax: (508) 793-8881; or e-mail: BNikasHayes@clarku.edu.

In addition, the Department offers a fifth year MA in Geographic Information Science for graduates of the Geography Major. Bachelor of Arts/Master of Arts in Geographic Information Science, BA/MA .

In conjunction with the Department of International Development, Community and Environment, the Graduate School of Geography does offer a Master of Science in Geographic Information Sciences for Development and Environment (MA GISDE), please see the program’s information at Geographic Information Sciences for Development and Environment, MS .

Graduate MA Requirements

Only students seeking a doctoral degree are admitted to the Graduate School of Geography.  However, two types of of M.A. degrees are available once enrolled as a Ph.D. Student:  Pre-doctoral and non-doctoral (or terminal).  A Pre-doctoral MA should be requested at the time of achieving ABD (all but dissertation) status. This type of M.A. would be for students entering the doctoral degree program directly from a B.A. or B.S. and/or if they have a master’s degree in something other than geography.  The non-doctoral M.A. in geography is given only if the student leaves the doctoral program at the end of the second year meeting the departmental requirements to receive the M.A.
